1st and 2nd Grade Curriculum

Our 1st and 2nd grades are separate for all subjects except PE, music, art, and Spanish.

ELA (English Language Arts )

Using the Wonders curriculum, ELA includes reading, writing, phonics, speaking and listening.  In addition to daily teacher read alouds, students are encouraged to read independently as their skills and confidence grow. The UFLI phonics curriculum is utilized daily to strengthen phonics skills.

Writing

Students write daily and work on the process of writing from brainstorming ideas, drafting and revising. Students complete formal writing assignments as well as utilize journal writing for more informal pieces. In first grade, students work through the Zaner-Bloser workbook to learn proper formation of numbers and letters. They have several opportunities to practice daily throughout the other content areas. In second grade, cursive writing is introduced at the second half of the year and practiced through the Zaner Bloser workbook. At the end of the year, students are encouraged to use cursive writing to complete specific assignments.

Math

Math time is an exciting part of the day where students build a strong foundation in number sense, addition and subtraction, place value, and basic geometry using the Go Math! curriculum. Lessons are hands-on, engaging, and designed to meet the needs of all learners through interactive activities, visual models, and real-world problem solving. Students grow in confidence as they explore math concepts and develop critical thinking skills in a supportive and fun learning environment.

Science

Students explore God’s amazing creation through hands-on investigations and age-appropriate experiments. They learn to observe, ask questions, and make discoveries about the world around them. Topics include plants and animals, weather and seasons, light and sound, and the properties of matter. Science lessons are interactive and engaging, helping students develop curiosity, wonder, and a deeper appreciation for how things work.

Social Studies

Students begin to understand their place in the world using the MyWorld curriculum. They learn about families, communities, citizenship, geography, and important figures from history through stories, activities, and discussions. Lessons help students make connections between their lives and the world around them, while building a foundation in responsibility, respect, and what it means to be part of a community.

Religion

Students grow in their understanding of God’s love and His Word through the Enduring Faith curriculum. They learn key Bible stories, foundational truths of the Christian faith, and how to apply God’s Word to their daily lives. Lessons focus on God’s promises, the life of Jesus, and what it means to live as a child of God. Through prayer, songs, crafts, and discussion, students deepen their faith and build a strong spiritual foundation.
